All around the world, individuals and communities are learning to save and conserve. Most of us realize the need to save financially, such as for retirement, weddings, or for college educations. However, but saving natural resources in order that our descendants can enjoy a high quality of life isn’t necessarily something everyone thinks to do. Most of us should start off small, local, and without trying to change the world all at once. Work consistently and steadily to work our way up to actions with greater impact. We need to make this work, starting small and being consistent is often what works. There are many ways to save and preserve natural resources, we need to figure them out and implement them for the future generations.

One of the first steps most of us can take is to save water. Conserving water is easy, just get into the habit of turning off the tap quickly and promptly. Don't let the water run while you brush your teeth or shave. Turn it on when you need to rinse, then turn it back off. This act alone can save hundreds of gallons of water in your household every year.

Why Go Green?

Sparingly watering lawns and gardens is another way. Most lawns do not need constant watering. Find the minimum level of watering that will just keep your lawn green and healthy. Plus watering at night, especially when the temperature reaches its overnight low, is the best time to water a lawn or garden as it will incur the least amount of water loss due to evaporation. And again, preserve ground water by not carelessly discarding dangerous chemicals, including batteries, into land fills.

Saving Our Air

Industrial pollution is responsible for most of our air quality issues, but there are steps individuals can take to keep pollution down. Car-pooling is a great option compared to driving solo. If you work in or near downtown or a business park, it might be very easy to find a car-pool to join. Write letters to your congressmen about your concerns regarding industrial pollution. Speak up, take action, and let your thoughts be known.

Same goes for magazines too. If your community does not have a recycle bin, insist on having one. Or else find out the nearest community that has one. Recycle these items on your way to work/grocery store. With new and affordable electronic items launching everyday, we have a whole lot of electronic junk. Do not trash those old laptops, computers, mobile phones, iPods and MP3 players. With increased environmental awareness, recycling electronics is getting easier. Many websites pay for the shipping and give you cash if the item is of any value. If not, they recycle it responsibly. Some electronic items can be turned into cash, even if they are broken.

Switch to electronic bills. Stop paper bills / statements. Who needs another pile of paper, with your personal information on it, lying around in your house, when you can view & pay your bills online?

To go green, we can grow our food around our own house. Our house has sunroofs and at night we burn candles and lanterns for light. What’s the use of television? All we need to rejuvenate after a hard day’s work is a few deep breaths of clean, fresh and oxygen rich air. We entertain ourselves and our children with anecdotes which also help them learn some useful things. We play outdoor games to exercise. Our’s is a big family and nobody has been sick for years. We go around the town on our feet. We don’t go to office, we work at home for living and we enjoy our life with our family. Now that’s a pretty organic picture, isn’t it? Though, it seems to be from a few centuries ago.

With all the modernization and industrialization, we are going away from this pretty picture; we are going away from nature. The advent of science and technology has made our life easier and the world smaller. The perfect green picture above is a stark contrast to our life today, it sounds primitive.
